Medieval Armored Turnips

Medieval Armored Turnips.
They are Turnips Au Gratin.

5 or 6 small turnips
1 1/2 cups (6 oz) mozzarella or povolone, shredded
1/2 cup parmesan, shredded
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted. Plus softened butter for the dish.
2 teaspoons poudre douce

Preheat oven to 350 F / 180 C

Peel the turnips then slice them into disks. Boil them about 20 minutes, drain and allow to cool. Meanwhile grate the cheeses and melt the butter.

Coat the bottom of a baking dish with the softened butter. Layer the cheeses first in the bottom of the dish then top with a thin layer of turnips. Pour over some of the melted butter then sprinkle on some poudre douce. Top with more cheese and continue to layer until done. Bake until the cheeses are melted - about 15 to 20 minutes.

Serve warm.

Note: This is good with sliced sweet onions boiled with the turnips and layered into the dish.
