Medieval Spices & Nuts


A list of known Spices & Herbs eaten in the Middle Ages:

Peppercorns (Black Pepper, White Pepper)
Salt
Sugar (it was considered a spice)
Honey
Cinnamon (Cassia)
Cloves
Nutmeg
Ginger
Saffron
Sage
Rosemary
Thyme
Cardamom
Parsley
Coriander
Cumin
Turmeric
Mace
Anise
Caraway
Mustard
Grains of Paradise
Poppy Seeds
Mint
Dill
Fennel
Garlic
Anchovies  (used for flavoring)


Balsamic Vinegar, Apple Cider Vinegar and Wine Vinegar was used.

Butter, Olive Oil, Bacon Grease, Suet, Lard and Animal Oil/Fat used.
